What NOT to Do on Twitter

E-mail Print PDF

In the last few years, Twitter has exploded and become one of the most visual social media outlets available. It allows users to connect with not only friends, but businesses and industry experts. But diving into Twitter without learning the ropes can make you an ineffective participant.

Here are some of the biggest mistakes Twitter users can make.

Not Being Active

The best way to get results from your efforts on Twitter is to be an active participant. Become part of the conversation and include your input. Being active can vary depending on who you are and what you are comfortable with, but you should dedicate yourself to tweeting a few times everyday. By sending out a few tweets in the morning and again in the afternoon, you will begin to gain a presence among your followers and they will be more likely to connect with you.

Tweeting Too Much

You have to find a balance on Twitter. While tweeting once a day won’t help you gain much, tweeting every two minutes can be just as bad. If you spend all your time sending out tweets, you don’t give yourself the opportunity to read tweets, with means that you miss out on an important opportunity to engage with like-minded twitter users. If you spend your entire day tweeting about air dryers, but don’t stop to see what others have to say, you might miss another user who is asking questions about  desiccant air dryers, and the opportunity to start a conversation.

Also, if you tweet too often you will annoy your followers and lose them, people will start to ignore them and you are less likely to be retweeted.

You Talk Too Much about Yourself

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tweet about the stuff going on in your life, but you should limit it. Twitter is about information sharing and connecting. You are more likely to engage your followers by talking about current events or a specific topic interest, such as travel or technology. If you are insistent on tweeting about your personal life, at least add in a #hashtag or question, so you might engage someone.

You are Not Connecting

If you are on Twitter and not engaging with other users to start a conversation, then you should stop wasting your time because you clearly don’t understand what Twitter is for. Reply to other users, add #hashtags, retweet and engage other users who are not already part of the conversation by using the @ symbol. This is how you become a power tweeter and gain more and more followers.

You Don’t have a Personality

People want to connect with a user they feel like they can relate to. If you don’t establish a personality or a niche, then you will not gain the followers you want. If you love sports, travel, comedy, make that known and you will begin connecting with users who appreciate your commonalities. Don’t be something that you’re not because it’s pretty easy to point out a faker. Just be you.

After reading about what not to do on Twitter, like limiting yourself to one topic (desiccant air dryers instead of all industrial cleaning methods), you’re probably interested in learning more about LinkedIn. Guest post written by Kristin
