A good domain name can help ensure that your web site gets the attention it deserves. It can help drive traffic to your site, and promote you company's or organization's brand. Here are some issues to consider when selecting a domain name.
How likely is it that the name will be properly spelled immediately after being heard. Imagine stating the name over the radio and try to determine what percentage of the audience would spell the name correctly.
Does it end with a common extension-- .com - .net- .org ? These are the most common domain names and most easily remembered.
How broadly applicable is the name? Is it very general and could be applied to a variety of firms, enter a high percentage? Is it so specific that it could only be applied to a few businesses? The best name will be broad enough so that it will be found by a variety of search on a topic
How many words are in the domain name? Fewer is better, easier to remember and type into a browser.
Is the name descriptive? Does is suggest obvious site content (e.g. NewsOnline.com) Names that confuse people about what they might find at the site should be not be used (e.g. OrangeSky.com).
Avoid abbreviations unless they are widely known and used. Avoid names like eName.com or BizOnline.com.
Have your current domain name or proposed domain name appraised to see if it the value you business or organization needs.
